Natural Stone Stripping Guides
History, Authenticity, Flawless Function. Framed & bezelled in nickel silver, these guides are a classic class act! 8mm, 9mm, 10mm, 11mm, & 12mm Outside Diameters. Combining our incredible range of colors and sizes in this category, these guides comprise our most-ordered group of guides; we sell more of these than any other four groups of our other guides combined. Yes, these are our ‘standard’ polished stone guide, but we offer one heck of a lot of non-standard colors and non-standard stones along with the usual Red Agate and ROY (Red/Orange/Yellow) Banded Agate. When paired with our second generation Hydro-Welded™ Frames, these guides set the standard.
Note: December 2020 – We are now offering these guides exclusively with our Standard Hydro-Welded Frames. While many guides pictures on this page show our first generation frames, we’ve been making and photographing guides with the new, second generation Hydro-Welded™ Frames and these are being added to the gallery. How to tell the difference from a picture? The second generation frames are noticeably “crisper” and have more sharply defined apexes at the tip of the wings where the frame grips the bezelled stone ring.
Stone color options vary by size. Check the drop down lists to see what’s currently available.
Finish Finish Options:
Bear in mind, the precious silver seam resists oxidation and is visible as a contrasting line down the center of each foot if you opt for the blued finish; it is more apparent in Heavy Duty frames than in regular wire Standard frames. This is an artifact of process that testifies to the superior quality of our second generation frames.
Frame Style Options:
- Standard Frame (regular wire weight) – the ideal balance of strength and light weight.
- Heavy Duty “Guide” Frame (one wire weight up…bold, distinctive, incredibly strong, and ideal for hard daily use by guides and other full-time anglers) – modest up-charge.
What Size Do You Need?
Size selection is a personal choice and there are no hard and fast rules. This chart is a rough guide, intended primarily for traditionalist bamboo rodmakers who expect their rods to be cast with modern synthetic lines.
8mm: 1 wt. – 3 wt.
9mm: 3 wt. – 4 wt.
10mm: 4 wt. – 5 wt. – This is our most popular size, by far.
11mm: 6 wt – 7 wt.
12mm: 7 wt. +
Please Note: Based on our sales and lots of email discussions, glass and graphite rod builders tend to up-size by at least one size, e.g. they might choose an 11mm or even a 12mm stripping guide for a 5 weight fly rod. That said, I personally prefer the “smaller” guides – based on the chart above – that balance out with a traditional ‘bamboo’ aesthetic, even when building rods on synthetic blanks. Lots of folks disagree, and we all make nice tackle. Make rods that suit your eye and/or your client’s eye. Any maker who intends the rod to be used EXCLUSIVELY with naturally smaller diameter silk lines, might want to down-size by one size, e.g., they might choose an 8mm guide for use with a 4 weight silk line.
